Putting Things in Perspective

Last summer, we had to pass a big and very official exam which we prepped for all year long. It wouldn't have been so bad if I didn't have arabic geography and history, which are basically the equivalent to torture (PL student, back me up here).
On top of that, I'm the kind of person that gets really stressed and who panics over small stuff so those exams were really awful for me. I panicked nearly every night before them, which is kind of funny considering the amount of studying I did (Quick tip: If you wanna avoid feeling under-prepared, study).

Story of my life

The night before the very first exam, I was a bundle of nerves and anticipation was flooding me. I was the most annoying person to be with which is probably why my dad sat me down, made me look him in the eye and said-and I quote(more or less)-"Ten years from now, will it really matter if you fail one stupid exam? It just means you'll have one less year of work. Stop stressing out and put things into perspective!" Now granted, there were swear words involved and I know it matters to my dad if I fail, but I kind of carried this with me since then, to always remember if it all becomes too much. He always makes it a point to remind us that nothing is worth sacrificing your health-mental or physical-and your integrity for.
Always ask yourself "Will this really matter in the long run?" whenever you give something meaningless too much importance. Now I'm not telling you to slack off on studying or work but if you got a bad grade on just this one maths test, don't go crazy over it. I promise you, no matter what anyone tells you, it's okay and completely normal to fail sometimes.
I chose one example but there are so many more: Bad grades, people being mean to you, even things as trivial as bad haircuts.. Contrary to popular belief, it's not the end of the world. Because at the end of the day, I passed the exam (even with my bad grades in geography/history) and looking back I feel like such and idiot for even stressing about that. Take my word for it, or don't.. Whatever floats ya boat.
