The Breakfast Club

"The Breakfast Club" by John Hughes (1985) is one of my favorite movies ever and it seemed appropriate to write my first post about it.

It's about 4 teenagers who belong to different cliques in high school and who are forced to spend their Saturday together in detention. There's Bryan; the brain, Andy; the athlete, Alison; the basket case, Claire; the princess and (John) Bender; the criminal. As the movie progresses, you see the teenagers judgement and hostility towards each other shift as they get to know one other better. One line that Bryan says at the end of his letter can sum up the whole movie :"We were brainwashed". They were brainwashed by people telling them who to be friends with, they were brainwashed by the school faculty, they were brainwashed by their prejudices.
Never could Bryan and Bender be friends, they were 2 opposites, 2 worlds apart and yet here they were, after only a day spent together, realizing they had more in common than they thought. It goes to show that everyone has a story that you don't know about, and if you just cared enough to listen, you'd realize that everyone is the same: Everyone has struggles whether they admit it or not.
This movie may seem really sappy and cliche but it's really not. It's very enjoyable and emotional and teaches us lessons that we may know but never cared enough to apply. It's just overall my favorite movie in this genre and I highly recommend you watch it.
